Opening Day

Around here summer is know as Ice Cream Season. Geoff rarely eats ice cream the rest of the year, but once the weather warms up he becomes an ice cream aficionado. There are several mom and pop ice cream stores in our general area - all serving home made ice cream. Several years ago we visited ALL of them and Geoff figured out which ones deserved repeat visits. And repeat visiting we have done. So much so that one year, when friends were visiting from AZ for a week, they sent us an ice cream cone Christmas tree ornament because we had taken them out for ice cream so many times in that week. We hadn't even noticed.

The last weekend in May is officially Opening Day of Ice Cream Season. Geoff could barely contain himself. He has been following a low-carb diet for about 3 weeks now and was all ready to declare last Sunday a free day, so that he could officially open the season. He even tried to turn the even into a multi-family extravaganza by inviting both of our brothers and their families to come along. Geoff was crushed that only his brother and one of our nieces was free. And then right when we were planning on leaving it started to rain. Really hard. (Did I mention that his favorite ice cream spot, Somerset Creamery, is an outdoor venue)? There was no way we could postpone this trip. He would have been beyond disappointed. So, we piled in the car and headed out. Amazingly the skies cleared and the rain stopped. And then we saw it. A rainbow. And not just any rainbow - a full rainbow! We could see from one end to the other. None of us had ever seen that before. It was beautiful. And guess where the rainbow seemed to end. That's right. At the pot of gold known as Somerset Creamery! It was like a mini-miracle. We all ordered whatever we wanted (no holding back on Opening Day). And we ate our ice cream outside standing at the end of the rainbow. Geoff never looked so happy!

I love this post Pam!!! Of course living in FL, we do not have seasonal ice cream places and sadly we don't have many locally owned places. There is one local place in town, and a chain, which is good and serves fresh ice cream, and then there is a DQ..LOL, and a good dip cone or a dilly bar can hit the spot.
My son, Nick, has ice cream almost every single day, at 7:45 at night........it's a ritual. He would appreciate your husbands desire for just the right ice cream. I busy a different brand and flavor nearly every week just to keep things lively here!
Enjoy the ice cream season.

How incredibly fun! We don't go out for ice cream very often because it is so expensive and I am so cheap. But we also don't have any places that make their own.

My mom loves ice cream and we ate it almost every day growing up. Now it is a rare treat. LOVE the mom and pop places...

And the rainbow? That is just surreal!

Great post!

I remember when I was in High School, looking forward to when Frosty Cove would open for the season.
When I went away to college, there was a place called Doozies that would give away free cones their first day.

I think that every Sunday from the end of May until the end of September should be reserved for some wonderful ice cream. I certainly look forward to it and can usually talk David into going for ice cream on a Sunday evening. The perfect end to the weekend....

This was a fun blog!!!

What a neat story and a great tradition y'all have. I LOVE ice cream too, so I certainly appreciate your husband's drive for it! I miss the mom & pop places - not sure that we have any around anymore.

Geoff has such a nice smile when he's happy and I have a feeling that smile outshone the rainbow.

Jenna - I love seasonal ice cream vendors. They just scream "summer" to me.

Colleen - We do go every single weekend. Usually on Sunday as well. Maybe I'll see you at one of the shops. Do you ever go to Sunshine Creamery in East Providence. That's another favorite.

Well great, now I'm craving ice cream. Thanks a lot Pam!

Of course in just one short month I'll be up at my cottage in MI, in a small town with no grocery store, but 3 ice cream parlors on Main Street! Eating right always goes out the window my first couple days in Pentwater!

Shoot! I just bought Ian ice cream at the store today. I rarely eat ice cream, but it sure is sounding good right now. There goes my workout at the Y for today.

I wish we had creamery here. The best we can do for ice cream here is Baskin Robbins, but still... even regular ice cream is pretty great ice cream when you're doing it with your family! :)
