Sentimental Sunday

Today's Sentimental Sunday continues the theme of Freedom and Independence. And to celebrate the fact that the crown of the Statue of Liberty is now reopened to the public (it had been closed since 9/11), I'd like to post a picture of Lady Liberty herself. This picture was taken in 2002 during my first (and only) visit to the Statue of Liberty. I had accompanied Katie's 6th grade class on a day trip to NYC to visit the Statue and Ellis Island. We were all saddened that we couldn't go inside the monument (at that time the entire thing was off limits), but standing at the base of that monument and thinking about all that she represents, was an awe-inspiring moment.

Isn't she beautiful?

OK, I can't resist a book recommendation. Sorry! If you haven't read Time and Again by Jack Finney, I recommend it. It is a fascinating book about time travel (not science fiction) in which the construction of the Statue of Liberty plays a small (but fascinating role).

Back to Lady Liberty. One word... Majestic!

Definitely awe-inspiring to stand there. I haven't been since I was in the 6th grade, amazingly enough, but I still get a lump in my throat when I think about what she means.

Nice post, Pam, and nice thoughts. I've only seen the statue from the Staten Island ferry, but it's still awe-inspiring.

And thanks for the book recommendation - I love anything to do with time travel!! Have you read The Time Traveler's Wife, Replay (review on my blog), and Jumper (not exactly time travel but similar)? All favorites of mine.

Thanks -

Sue

I have been inside, but not all the way up to the crown...Ashley and David have and they just found it to be awe inspiring. It was about 1 1/2 years before 9/11. I am so happy that people can experience this again. She is so beautiful!

Oh my God...Time and Again is one of my favorite books of all time! My mother recommended it to me years and years ago, and it's one of those books I could go back and read time and time again (Ha! I didn't realize I did that until I just reread this comment!), it's wonderful! Speaking of which, I haven't read it in a couple years, so I think it's time that it got put back in the rotation. Thanks Pam!

I climbed to the crown in @ 1970/71. I've only been to NYC twice, and the second time I didn't do the climb...lol.
Awe inspiring at any angel.
